Recently I have been rewatching and getting back into one of my favorite adult animated sitcoms, Bob’s Burgers. Part of this has been heavily fueled by mini video essays about what the show does well and also a series of videos posted on TikTok by the Bob’s Burgers team. Specifically the bobsburgersdancevids page. This page is full of short, beautiful animations of various characters from Bob’s Burgers doing different TikTok dance trends. Each of them are hand draw and animated by the talented Simon Chong, who I am now designating the “James Baxtor” of the Bob’s Burgers animation team. The video that started this TikTok page was of the character, Jimmy Jr. doing the dance to the music made by those little Irish kids.
Simon Chong is the current supervising director on Bob’s Burgers as well as a story board artist and animator who was brought on to the show after creating his own Archer/Bob’s Burgers crossover. The reason I have dubbed Simon Chong as the “James Baxtor” of Bob’s Burgers is because you can always tell when he was the one doing the story boarding or the animation as its like the fluidity and expression of the characters gets turned up to the max. For Bob’s Burgers you can see most of his animation influence in the Bob’s Burgers Movie and the associated short, My Butt Hazza Fever. He has been a supervising director, storyboarder, animator, and retake storyboard artist and has worked on all the other Bob’s Burgers related properties such as Central Park and The Great North.
I really enjoy his work and am glad that his animations are given their time to shine on TikTok and that they are getting me back into this great show!
